Primary Project Objectives
Iowa’s 2013 Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) has set a goal of achieving a 15 percent reduction in fatalities and major injuries on Iowa highways by the year 2020. Curve delineation is one of the priority strategies identified in the SHSP. A system to extract highway curvature data from GIS maps was developed in conjunction with the TOPS Laboratory to facilitate preventative crash measures. CurveFinder, the application, utilizes a validated algorithm to determine curve data. Development of this algorithm is detailed in the paper “Automated Identification and Extraction of Horizontal Curve Information from Geographic Information System Roadway Maps”.
