Prototype Hybrid Power Highway Camera
Wisconsin’s first hybrid power highway camera was installed October 25, 2011 at the interchange of I-39/90/94 and County Highway V in DeForest, WI. See its live images on Wisconsin 511.
ITS devices require two things: power and communications. In rural settings where neither are available, we have demonstrated that communication can be achieved by long range point to point wireless, and power can now be furnished by a hybrid solar and wind turbine system.
The equipment includes a power management system that can be monitored by the State Traffic Operations Center (STOC). The power collection and consumption data will be collected through 2011-2012 and evaluated for performance and subsequent system improvements. In time a hybrid installation such as this may also support other devices and technologies such as microwave or Bluetooth traffic detection.
