Description: This 12-hour (delivered over multiple days) instructor-led webinar is designed to assist in understanding the design documents that were developed as part of an FHWA Work Zone Safety grant. Topics covered during this training include the following:

  • Principles of Work Zone Safety – Safe System Approach
  • Overview of Work Zone Design Principles
  • Work Zone Lighting Design
  • Oversize/Overweight Vehicle Accommodation
  • Positive Protection Design
  • Traffic Incident Management
  • Designing for Pedestrians & Bicyclists
  • Traffic Management and Safety During Winter Construction
  • Traffic Diversion for Work Zone Traffic Management

Who Should Attend: This workshop is directed toward highway design engineers and work zone engineers.

Traffic Incident Management in Work Zones: Training for First
Responders, Contractors and Field Engineers

Description: This two-hour instructor-led webinar focuses on the best practices for prevention, response and follow-up involving Work Zone Traffic Incident Management (WZ TIM). Dealing with a motor vehicle crashes or similar incidents in a highway construction zone requires the combined skills of many people including police, fire, emergency medical services (EMS), highway agency, and contractor personnel. WZ TIM is more complicated than ordinary TIM because access to the incident site is often difficult, there is limited space for response operations, and there are more organizations to coordinate. Response can be hampered by the combined effect of incident traffic backups and construction closures.

Who Should Attend: This workshop is directed toward first responders, contractors and field engineers.

Designing Temporary Pedestrian/Bicycle Accommodations

Description: This half-day instructor-led webinar is designed to assist in understanding the design documents that were developed as part of an FHWA Work Zone Safety grant, with a focus on Non-Motorized Road User Accommodations in Work Zones

Who Should Attend: This workshop is directed toward highway design engineers and work zone engineers.

Connected Work Zone (CWZ) 101 Training: Introduction to the Connected Work Zone Standard – (PDF Flyer)

Description: This training is the first module in a two-part series on Connected Work Zones (CWZ) which has been developed based on the Work Zone Data Exchange (WZDx) specification. This 90-minute session introduces the 2024 Connected Work Zones Implementation Guide and Standard v1.0.0, with a focus on the fundamentals of work zone event data and connected device integration.

Who Should Attend: This training is designed for agencies beginning their journey into connected work zone data management and device integration, as well as those seeking a refresher on foundational concepts.

Safe System in Work Zones

Description: This half-day course will focus on the safe system approach and on how it can be applied to work zone design. The course will include case study examples of safe system approach in work zones along with a workshop problem for participants to use the safe system approach to improve the safety and mobility in a transportation management plan for a work zone design plan.

MUTCD/PROWAG Implications for Work Zones

Description: This half-day course will focus on two new national standards that impact work zone design: the FHWA Eleventh Edition to the MUTCD and U.S. Access Board Public Right-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG).

Utility Traffic Control

Description: This half-day train-the-trainer course is designed for use by state and local agency staff responsible for assuring utility companies in their jurisdiction are using appropriate national standards and guidance when they train their local companies.
